Creating a Strategic Plan for your Community
Strategic Planning serves as the central core for many of GMU’s CAPH initiatives. The range of projects and resources offered by GMU’s CAPH provides assistance to individuals and organizations as they seek to achieve their own goals. For community efforts, the reports on mature drivers and distracted driving are helpful background resources. The Traffic Safety Communications Kit, and sample campaign materials, are also helpful for program development.
Strategic Planning for Mature Drivers
This study provides a foundation for a strategic plan regarding mature drivers. It includes a literature review, key informant interviews and a national survey. The foundation document includes physical considerations (eyesight, reaction speed, turning and driving activities, and fragility), self-determination, essential services, medication, knowledge, self-sufficiency and independence, quality of life, and intermediaries (medical and health professionals, families). For each topic, included are an informational foundation, implications, potential strategies and strategic plan considerations.)
Distracted Driving: Review of Current Needs, Efforts and Recommended Strategies
The multi-phase initiative was designed and implemented to address areas in which current approaches might be enhanced. The ultimate purpose of this review was to examine current data, practices, standards, attitudes, and related issues in Virginia as well as nationwide regarding distracted driving. A primary focus was upon the use of cellular telephones while driving; however, this was done in the context of other issues associated with distracted driving, including the presence of other passengers (particularly among young drivers), eating, drinking, smoking, reading, writing, use of car computer devices and GPS systems, map reading, and related factors. The ultimate focus of this study was to identify specific strategies and sound recommendations for highway safety in Virginia
Traffic Safety Communications Kit
This is a compilation of resources and public awareness materials on eleven specific traffic safety topics, including aggressive driving, bicycle safety, drowsy driving, safety belts, and school bus safety. Contents include data, public service announcements, tips, brochures and artwork that can be used in a variety of public awareness approaches.
Traffic Safety Campaign Materials
Local communities can promote safety through the use of these ready-to-implement campaign materials. Most of the topics can be implemented at any time of the year. Typically included in these campaigns are brochures, public service announcements for the radio, press releases, art work, and fliers; each of these can be adapted with local contact information.
